Born in Chatswood, Sydney, Ian went to school in North Sydney and gained his medical degree from the University of New South Wales (MB.BS, 1972-1977).
Following qualification, Ian served internships at Woden Valley and Goulburn Hospitals (1978–1979); in the early 1980s, he practiced and undertook further medical studies in New Zealand (Family Medicine Training Program, Palmerston North; Obstetrics, Wanganui Hospital). In 1983, he returned to Australia, gaining a Diploma from the Royal Australian College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. From 1983-1989, Ian served as Visiting Medical Officer (Anaesthetics & Obstetrics) at Katoomba Hospital.
In addition to his current medical practices at Katoomba and Springwood, Ian has also practised general medicine at Mudgee, NSW (2005-2009), Bathurst, NSW (2010-2013) and Lawson, Blue Mountains (2013-2014).
With varied interests, Ian takes full advantage of the Blue Mountains environment and regularly enjoys camping, rock climbing, canyoning, cycling and bush walking. Testimony to his commitment to a healthy lifestyle, Ian has climbed in the Himalayas, walked the Kokoda Trail and run two Sydney-to-Surfs.
On the cultural side, Ian sings regularly with a choir, plays classical organ at home and is a member of Toastmasters. He also holds a Private Pilot’s Licence.
